Product metrics that matter: activation, retention, revenue

Product analytics dashboard with active users, activation funnel, retention, and revenue

Dashboard widgets are cheap; understanding is not. Too many SaaS teams measure plenty of things and know none of them. These are the handful of metrics that actually predict whether your product grows.

Start with one activation metric

Activation is the moment a new user reaches the "aha" — the point after which they keep coming back. Define it for your product (for a billing tool it might be "completed a checkout for the first time") and measure the percentage of signups that reach it.

  • If activation is low, growth spend is leaking before value
  • If activation is high but retention falls, the value isn't delivered repeatedly

One number, checked weekly, beats ten numbers checked quarterly.

Then the funnel, backwards from value

Map signup → setup → first value → recurring value, and measure conversion between each step. The biggest drop reveals your best fix. In one client case, an activation funnel exposed a broken SSO handoff that cost thousands in MRR every month — fixed in a day.

Retention is the revenue forecast

Cohort retention tells you whether users stick around across weeks and months. Improving retention by a few points often matters more than doubling acquisition, because retained users compound. Watch early cohorts closely — and watch churn before it shows up in revenue.

Revenue metrics that tell the truth

Monthly recurring revenue (MRR) is the headline, but the story is in the breakdown: new, expansion, contraction, and churned MRR. Is growth real if you're replacing lost revenue with new signups? Track payback period on acquisition cost so growth stays profitable.

“Growth teams that track activation, cohort retention, and net expansion make decisions weekly. Teams that overhaul dashboards make them quarterly — and check emails instead.” — Simran Dutta, VP Data & Products

Measuring it without a data team

You don't need a data engineer to start. A one-line SDK gives you events, funnels, cohorts, and revenue out of the box — and yes, that's precisely what CloudyMetrics does. When you outgrow the product and need a full warehouse, our data engineering team will build it on top of the same events.
